PORCHFEST 2025 AT TCFA!

Trumansburg Porchfest brings the community together through music! It is a homegrown music festival featuring free shows on porches all over the neighborhood. The event goes on rain or shine, and visitors are encouraged to enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, shopping, drinks, and dessert in our welcoming village while they are here.

Porchfest is Saturday June 7 with two outstanding performances in TCFA's backyard.

Trumansburg Porchfest began with a couple of Main Street business owners and a few village residents. The first annual event took place on June 17, 2017 with over 40 acts playing shows on over 30 porches. Trumansburg Porchfest is completely community supported and volunteer-run.

Our 2025 spring dance recital will celebrate our ongoing renovations and subsequent inspirational journey. This year is reigniting our passion and love for dance. As our beloved TCFA grows as a monument of community and culture, we will expand and reignite in our beautiful town of Trumansburg.

Tickets for each event are priced at $6.00 and will grant you access to one of the scheduled performances on Saturday, May 17 or Sunday, May 18. If you plan to attend three or more performances, we recommend purchasing the weekend pass for only $15.00.

The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA) is pleased to announce the ninth annual Cayuga Arts Collective (CayAC) member show, “Heaven and Hell”. Curated by CayAC founders Domenica Brockman and Marina Delaney, the theme of heaven and hell is explored through the diverse visions of over forty member-artists.

Due to ongoing construction at the Conservatory, the exhibit will take place at the Community School of Art and Music (CSMA), 330 E. State Street in Ithaca. The show opens on Friday, May 2, 5-8pm as part of Ithaca Gallery Night.

Live music provided by BIBA! featuring Lynn Wiles and Jessica Custer-Bindel.

Light refreshments will be served.

For the duration of the exhibit, visitors are encouraged to participate in the “People’s Choice Award.” A ballot box will be available in the main gallery, offering everyone the opportunity to vote for their favorite piece.

TCFA serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Cayuga Arts Collective a group of about one hundred and twenty artists from the Finger Lakes region. Founded in 2017, the mission of the Cayuga Arts Collective is to build community by fostering creativity in the visual arts.

The exhibit runs through May 27, 2025

Caryn Sheckler is returning to TCFA to celebrate the New Year.

Join TCFA as we ring in the new year with an afternoon Gong Bath experience.

Yes! We are opening our main room for this New Year's Day Event.

Our gong and gong bath is becoming an annual tradition, and it will include Celestial Communications, a style of seated movement that helps bring on a state of relaxation.

A pathway to easily explore the benefits of meditation. Gongs and gong baths offer a super easy way to slow down brain activity and thoughts to lower stress levels almost instantly. In this workshop, we will discuss how different brain waves create different thought patterns and how sound can create overall harmony in our bodies.

The workshop will include Celestial Communications, a style of seated movement that helps bring on a state of relaxation. The vibrations of the gongs will wash over you, leading you to a state of profound relaxation and healing. After the gong bath, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and a chance to experience playing the gongs themselves. Profound breakthroughs can occur during a gong bath, so you may want to bring a journal to make notes at the end of this event.

Please bring a mat and small blanket to make yourself cozy.

Gong Master Caryn Sheckler has been playing gongs for about 10 years. She has studied with internationally renowned Gong Masters Don Conreaux and Mike Tamboro. Caryn is an internationally trained Level 2 Kundalini Yoga Instructor with 20 years experience and teaches senior fitness and chair yoga in Trumansburg.

TCFA will be joining forces with the STEPS project in Ovid to raise funds for those displaced by the recent and tragic fires in Ovid, NY. In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day weekend, TCFA will be featuring the vibrant Rock-Celtic band Kilrush, creating the perfect atmosphere for dancing and celebrating the collective spirit of giving to neighbors in need. The event will be held at the Ovid VFW; 7068 NY-96 in Ovid, NY. Admission is “give what you can”. This is a donation only event.

About Kilrush: In 2001 a group of musicians from the Elmira-Corning Region began meeting up to play informal trad sessions in local pubs and coffee shops. Over the years the band evolved and began to play a more contemporary style, infusing the influences of other artists and genres to reflect the Irish-American experience. This resulted in a high energy, crowd pleasing style with all the elements loved in a traditional Irish band, a sound the band refers to as “Triple Distilled Celtic Rock”.

Enjoy the opportunity to dance on a large wooden dance floor and celebrate the feel of any age-old dance hall. All ages are welcome!

TOIVO, playing traditional social dance music of the Finger Lakes and more, will present a Spring Forward Community Dance-Party Fundraiser for the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts. This fun event will take place at the Enfield Valley Grange on Sunday, March 9, 2025 – when Daylight Savings Time begins. All ages are welcome!

TOiVO plays music that is good for dancing and good for listening! Bring a partner or come alone! TOiVO will play an eclectic mix of Scandinavian, Tex-Mex, Cajun, blues, honky-tonk, European, South American, and many original dance tunes. You’ll enjoy waltzes, tangos, two-steps, polkas, schottisches, hambos, foxtrots, and cheek-to-cheek.

The players are Richard Koski, button accordion; Jason Koski, mandolin; Stefan Senders, banjo and triangle; Jim Reidy, guitar; Harley Campbell, upright bass; and Annie Campbell, snare drum.

The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo

Comprised of Valerie and Benedict Turner, The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo are ambassadors of Country Blues music, Piedmont-style fingerpicking, and roots percussion. Their mission is to help bring awareness to these unique aspects of African-American culture and to early blues artists' contributions through performing and teaching. They have entertained audiences domestically and abroad and are much loved wherever they go.

As 2018 inductees into the New York Blues Hall of Fame, this husband-and-wife duo feel that "there are stories to tell, people to remember, and things that must be said" so, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song. A Piedmont Blūz concert isn’t just music – it’s an experience as they transport you back to the 1920s and 1930s, the hey-day of acoustic Country Blues music. In addition to performing songs from that time frame, they introduce each piece with an interesting anecdote about the composer, the period, or the song itself. Added to Music to Life's official Juried Artist roster in 2024, the duo looks forward to contributing to this network of musician change agents.

The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo self-published a music book that the Library of Congress has acquired. This book teaches guitar players a traditional fingerpicking style popular among early blues musicians. They are also board members of the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation, with Valerie as its Co-President and Benedict as its Creative Director. In these capacities, they have conducted fundraising, published articles, given presentations about the life and times of John Hurt, and helped create a documentary film.

Welcome the New Year with a TCFA live music event supporting the Trumansburg Food Pantry . Sponsored by TCFA's Basement Club, Lynn Wiles and George Cook will be joining players, singers and songwriters from the Trumansburg community. The afternoon will feature a live mix of jazz, folk and blues tunes. Drop in and catch some live music. Drop off canned / dry goods for the Food Pantry! Admission is free, but please bring cans/dry goods to donate (no minimum quantity). Personal hygiene and cleaning items are also welcome, but no clothes.

About the Trumansburg Food Pantry: The mission of the Trumansburg Food Pantry is simply to distribute free food to people who are struggling to provide food for themselves or their families. Occasionally, personal care items and cleaning supplies are also available. There are no financial requirements, and currently there are no residential restrictions. If you’re hungry, our volunteer team is here to help!

Customers are offered staples like bread, milk, and eggs; plus, many other items such as meat, pasta & sauces, cereal, peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, butter, cheese, soups, and fresh produce – our menu changes and is sometimes unpredictable depending on availability. Generous community donations allow us to purchase the quality of foods we all enjoy and the quantity of foods needed to serve over 100 individuals in our community.

The Trumansburg Food Pantry is supported by an outstanding team of dedicated volunteers, strong community interest, and assistance from the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, the United Way of Tompkins County, and our local organizations, grocers and farms. TCFA presents our second annual Día de Muertos celebration. This fun mask-making event is one for all family members to enjoy. As part of our On the Road series, it will be held at St. James the Apostle Church, 17 S. Whig Street in Trumansburg.

A Mexican holiday tradition, Día de Muertos typically involves gathering to celebrate friends and family members who have passed with an altar or ofrendas lined with pictures of the dearly departed and their favorite foods. It is also known as Day of the Dead, All Saint’s Day or All Souls’ Day.

This event will include an arts and crafts room for making Día de Muertos masks and crepe paper flower hair accessories. The event will also feature an ofrendas where traditional foods are to be shared and enjoyed. Patrons are welcome to bring pictures of departed family, friends, and pets to place on the ofrendras.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

TCFA is pleased to announce our first On the Road series concert. Guitarist Tenzin Chopak joins pianist Emmett Scott once again for an unforgettable music experience. The event will be held in the Lodi Historical Building, 8493 South Main Street in Lodi, NY.

“An unmistakably singular sound” states No Depression Magazine.

Tenzin Chopak is a singer songwriter based in Ithaca, NY. Raised in Oak Ridge, TN with a singing minister father and water color and color pencil artist mother, Chopak was surrounded and suffused by art and music throughout his upbringing. The roots of music in the American south resonate deeply through his own unique voice which emerges as at once hauntingly timeless and fully his own. Chopak’s transportive music and live performances have been described as “incandescent”, “cinematic”, and "soul scorchingly beautiful".

Tenzin Chopak often performs accompanied by pianist Emmett Scott on keys, Moog bass, and backing vocals. In 2024 Tenzin and Emmett were joined by Ethan Jodziewicz (Aoife O’Donovan, Maya De Vitry, Milk Carton Kids) on bass and in the role of producer, Mark Raudabaugh (Sierra Hull, Donna the Buffalo) on drums, and Courtney Hartman, Ruth Moody (Wailin’ Jennys), Maya De Vitry, and Brittany Haas to record Tenzin’s upcoming studio album “Witness” in Nashville, TN. That album will be released in 2025.

A time honored tradition.

The Conservatory will be celebrating Halloween outdoors this year!

TCFA will once again be in the T'Burg Halloween spirit with an all-outdoor event! The front porch will feature our traditional caldron of candy, along with music and a fun costume contest.

Under our large tent, you will find friendly ghouls serving hot chocolate, coffee, and fresh apples courtesy of Kingtown Orchard. Our indoor bathrooms are not available due to building renovations, but we will have a porta-potty on-sight.

Learn tips, techniques and general instructions for outdoor pastel painting where you will create pastels on paper that can serve as a final piece or as a preparatory work for a later painting. Session will take place on a small farm with hillside views outside of Trumansburg village. Address provided with registration.

Cost $50.

Year Two of our partnership with the GrassRoots Music and Dance Festival.

Our Second Annual Grassroots Unplugged will be held the weekend of September 7 and 8.

TCFA Benefit Festival of music, dancing, and art.

September 7 & 8. Performers: 1:30pm - 9:30pm both days.

Tickets are $25 a day or $40 for both days.

For children 12 and under, admission is free.

DOORS OPEN AT 1:00 ON SATURDAY AND 11:30 ON SUNDAY.

A fun partnership between the GrassRoots Organization and the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts celebrating local artists in an indoor / outdoor festival of music.

Other activities include a kids crafts tent including face painting, watercolor painting and more.

Food and beverages will be sold including beer from Liquid State, Cider from South Hill Cider. and Coffee from Copper Horse Coffee Roasters.

Proceeds will support the Conservatory’s Capital Campaign to restore our historic building.

Sergei Mali to teach Ballet IV and Pointé at TCFA.

Sergei Mali was born in Leninsk, Kazakhstan. At the age of ten, he was enrolled in the Moscow School of Ballet, where he studied ballet, Russian folk dance classes, character dance, dance history, and partnering. He joined the corps de ballet in the world-renowned Bolshoi Theater. He was selected to join a group of Soviet dancers who would perform for several years in Elmira, New York, in the Mark Twain Musical Drama. With his powerful stage presence, brilliant technique, and sense of humor, he quickly became a favorite with audiences and returned to that production each summer for years. He later emigrated and danced with the St. Louis Ballet Company for four years, starting from the corps de ballet and finishing as a principal dancer. Afterward, he founded his own dance company, sharing his knowledge and experience with a new generation of dancers in St. Louis.

Our Musical Theatre Arts Program has expanded! TCFA is producing:

The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts’ musical theatre arts program is thrilled to present a fun-filled version of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr. on Saturday, August 17 at 7:30pm.

The musical theater arts program began in 2017 and has been growing in popularity ever since. This year, the program will produce a condensed version of the musical based on the 1951 Disney film Alice in Wonderland and the novel The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland and Through Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll.

The production is directed by Dona Roman, choreographed by Samantha Johnson, with musical direction by Joe Pepper, and set and property designs by Marina Delaney. The musical will feature students from the musical theatre arts program, a two-week summer workshop for children ages 7 and up. Our very special guest, Peggy Haine, will be making a cameo appearance in the production.

Enjoy a night of dancing to a traditional Latin dance band that plays the music of

Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

Jorge T. Cuevas & The Caribe Jazz Allstars will kick off the 2024 Latino Dance Fiesta at TCFA. Only two years strong, the Latino Fiesta now features a live dance band, and begins an annual tradition at the Conservatory.

Playing a mix of “irresistibly danceable” Latin Jazz originals and jazz standards, Jorge T. Cuevas & The Caribe Jazz Allstars play the styles of salsa, cha cha, merengue, samba, and swing all to be enjoyed on TCFA’s fabulous dance floor. Our dance party will kick off with a Latin dance lesson, and the evening will feature latin-themed food selections and a cash bar with sangria, beers, and cider.

The evening begins at 7:00 pm with a free Salsa lesson by Michael Luis Ristorucci of Salsa Ithaca, and the band begins at 7:30. D oors open at 6:45 pm.

Admission is $10.00.

TCFA will be offering an opportunity to meet and sketch with artists of the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) on Sunday April 14, from 2-4pm. This will be a free event and is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Guild and its work in scientific illustration. Dorothy Foreman Cotton was a bold and highly effective civil rights leader, who educated thousands in their citizenship rights and inspired generations of activists with her powerful freedom songs. The only woman on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s executive staff, Dorothy was a charismatic, courageous and consistently overlooked key player in the Civil Rights Movement, whose freedom schools, freedom songs and inspiring messages of the power within us all are profoundly needed today.

DIRECTORS’ STATEMENT

There was just something special about Dorothy Cotton. She sparkled with a spirit of freedom and
a message of empowerment. She inspired people wherever she went, and that includes in our small
town of Ithaca, New York, where she spent the last 25 years of her life. Hearing her stories, hearing her
break out into song, inspired us to produce this film to help carry her work forward. It felt particularly urgent to make this film—about this trailblazing woman—at this moment in history. First, in her work as Education Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)’s Citizenship Education Program, Dorothy moved thousands of people from a mindset of victim to that of fully engaged citizen—empowering Black people not only to exercise their right to vote, but to take hold of their full range of rights and responsibilities as citizens. This sort of education is so deeply needed today.

Second, as filmmakers we were moved by the need to redress the under-recognized contribution and sorely neglected role of women in the Civil Rights Movement. Dorothy Cotton was not the only woman whose contributions have been overlooked, ignored, or upstaged. MOVE traces a powerful line from Dorothy’s work to the work of Black women leaders and activists today. We are honored to bring Dorothy’s story to the forefront as an inspiration, in particular to women, to understand their rights and their power to bring about change.

PhotoSynthesis Productions has been making documentary films with a focus on social justice and education for 40 years. Our work has won hundreds of media awards and screened at festivals and theaters worldwide. Recent work has centered on climate change, civic engagement and participation in American democracy.

The Dorothy Cotton Institute was founded by Dorothy and her colleagues in 2007 to continue and expand her legacy. Dorothy wanted DCI’s work to be relevant to contemporary issues and to bring visibility to 21st century efforts for justice and freedom, civic engagement, and social transformation. She encouraged us to believe in ourselves, speak up, and stop waiting for somebody else to make things better.

After college she apprenticed to Gary Snyder in the Sierra foothills where she studied Buddhism and helped to build a wood-framed public school. This year’s showcase of artwork by members of the Finger Lakes chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. The exhibition brings art and science together to help us understand the importance of interconnectivity and explore the challenges of biodiversity loss, food insecurity and environmental conservation. The natural world has evolved over billions of years by developing extraordinary relationships between different species and populations. These symbiotic relationships, both cooperative and destructive, demonstrate the importance of long-term partnerships for a healthy ecosystem. From mysterious microscopic organisms to amazing plant life, insects, and large mammals including humans, many species' survival is interdependent on one another

Announcing “Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts: Past, Present, Future”, a special exhibit to commemorate our 40th anniversary, is being held in the main gallery of the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA), February through March 2024.

Every year the Conservatory hosts five exhibits and “Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts: Past, Present, Future” kicked off our 2024 exhibition calendar. It consists of historic documents, photographs, diagrams, architectural plans/renderings, and video. Explanatory texts will accompany these images and a tie-in lecture will take place at the closing. The purpose of this exhibit is to highlight the significance of the Conservatory from its inception as the First Baptist Church of Ulysses to its current role as a cultural center.

The show will be divided into three parts:

Part I: The Past will address the history of the 1851 building which is registered as a National and State landmark and is an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture.

Part II: The Present will highlight our current arts programs within the context of our institutional mission created four decades ago at the founding of the Conservatory as a center of learning and culture.

Part III: The Future will explain the restoration project planned for 2025-26 as well as our capital campaign to fund the project resulting from a matching grant of $279,000 from New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

Our March Celtic Celebration concludes with an uplifting performance by Traonach members members Mark Bickford and William & Adrienne Henrie. The concert will include a blend of traditional and contemporary Irish music. After playing together at Grassroots last summer, the group has prepared a new set of Irish music with lots of songs and tunes on fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandocello, accordion and concertina. Come help us finish the Saint Patrick's Day season in Trumansburg.

Mid-Afternoon Irish Tea Featuring An Afternoon of Harp Music with Lisa Fenwick

A variety pastries, teas, and coffees will be served as Lisa Fenwick presents a program on both Celtic lever harp and pedal harp. The concert will include a variety of music styles with a strong emphasis on Celtic music in celebration of St. Patrick's Day week. Lisa will engage with the audience and share her love for the instrument by sharing a bit about how the instrument works and a bit of information about how the harp has evolved over time.

Lisa Fenwick is an active harp performer throughout the region. When not playing harp, Lisa teaches harp, flute, and piano to all ages. Originally trained as a flutist, Lisa has served as an adjunct professor of music at SUNY Cortland and was on the faculty of the Community School of Music and Arts in Ithaca for over 20 years. She has maintained her own teaching studio since college as well as running and teaching Kindermusik of Ithaca for 14 years.

Lisa was originally drawn to the harp when playing in a flute and harp duo in college and she began to study harp right around this time. Lisa has played with the harp ensemble Harps on the Susquehanna and in the harp duo Enchantment as well as with other local performing groups but now most often performs throughout the region as a solo harpist. She has played numerous solo recitals throughout the area and often plays for weddings and other special events. She teaches harp both online and in her Ithaca studio.

TOIVO, playing traditional social dance music of the Finger Lakes and more, will present a Spring Forward Community Dance-Party Fundraiser for the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA).

This fun event will take place in the TCFA auditorium on Sunday, March 10, 2024 – Daylight Savings Time begins. Come and enjoy the biggest, best wooden dance floor in the Finger Lakes. All ages are welcome! TOiVO plays music that is good for dancing and good for listening! Refreshments will be available. Bring a partner or come alone! Wallflowers are welcome, too! TOiVO will play an eclectic mix of Scandinavian, Tex-Mex, Cajun, blues, honky-tonk, European, South American, and many original dance tunes. 1-1:45 pm Beginning Step Dance Open to dancers ages 7 and up. Learn Irish dance basics in a fun, structured class open to beginners. Footwear: ballet slippers or ghillies if you have them. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a water bottle, and be ready to move!

2-2:55 pm Teen/Adult Hard Shoe Open to teens and adults with experience in Irish hard shoe technique or tap dance. Practice technique used in an Irish traditional set dance, Garden of Daisies. Footwear: Jig (hard) shoes or tap shoes if you have them, otherwise dance sneakers or hard-soled shoes. Dress for comfort and movement, and bring a water bottle!

3:30-5 pm Ceili (Party) Dances! Open to teens and adults, with or without experience in Irish ceili dance. This fun class celebrates the joy of community dancing with others. Learn basic footwork and patterns, and move to traditional Irish music as you get ready for upcoming St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Bring a water bottle and friends and family. In the courtroom of a small Tennessee town, two historical giants of the legal profession do battle in a fictionalized version of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” trial: Mathew Harrison Brady, a character based on William Jennings Bryan, a three time presidential candidate and staunch defender of the biblical view of creation; and Henry Drummond, a character based on Clarence Darrow, defender of the teenage murderers, Leopold and Loeb, and the advocate for John Scopes, who exposed his students to Darwin’s theory of evolution.

With a cast of 40 people, INHERIT THE WIND explores the conflict between the Creationists and Evolutionists, between the teachings of the Bible and those of Darwin’s Origin of the Species. Without taking sides, it is a plea for keeping an open mind, thinking critically, and tolerating intellectual differences.

Local hula group to host a night of “Aloha for Maui” at the Conservatory

Aloha for Maui benefit fundraiser

Hula Hut will host an evening of “aloha” to raise awareness and funds for those impacted by the tragic fires in Maui, Hawaii on August 8, 2023.

Enjoy island-style entertainment, learn about lei-making, and even participate in a hula! Raise money for the people of Maui and get in on the aloha spirit with fun activities, and a silent auction.

Featured performers include Washburn Entertainment (DJ), Bob Keefe & the Surf Renegades (surf rock and Hawaiian music), Hula Hut (hula dance), Ithaca Ukes (ukulele), and Steven Mana‘oakamai Johnson (cultural presentation), and more.

Snacks and drinks will be available.

All proceeds will be donated to the Hawai'i Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund .

“Into the Wild(e) Unpacked”

The 39th Annual Fall Invitational art exhibit “Into the Wild(e)” at Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts closes with a gallery talk by curator Marina Delaney. Titled “Into the Wild(e) Unpacked”, Delaney will focus on the Oscar Wilde quotes included in the show — their meaning and continued relevance — as demonstrated in the paintings, sculpture and video installation on view.

The concept for this art show is an exploration of wildness in all its forms and each of the six participating artists — Mary Ann Bowman, Warren Bunn, Nicole Costa, Ben Marlan, Alice Muhlback, and William Roberts — bring elements of wildness to their work. Interspersed throughout the exhibit are quotes by Irish poet Oscar Wilde who championed “art for arts sake” at the end of the nineteenth century.

The talk will be followed by a closing reception. Free to attend. Gallery hours are Fridays, 10am-3pm and Sunday, 1-5pm through November 19.

An Evening with Hiroya Tsukamoto

Join us for an unforgettable evening of music with the incredibly talented Hiroya Tsukamoto.

Hiroya is a one-of-a-kind composer, guitarist and singer-songwriter from Kyoto, Japan. He began playing the five-string banjo when he was thirteen, and took up the guitar shortly after. In 2000, Hiroya received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and came to the United States. He formed his own group in Boston “INTEROCEANICO (inter-oceanic)” which consists of unique musicians from different continents including Latin Grammy Colombian singer Marta Gomez. The group released three acclaimed records (“The Other Side of the World”, “Confluencia” and “Where the River Shines”). Hiroya has released three solo albums (“Solo”, “Heartland” and “Places”).

Hiroya has been leading concerts internationally including several appearances at Blue Note(NYC), United Nations and Japanese National Television(NHK). In 2018, Hiroya won 2nd place in International Finger Style Guitar Championship.

Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA) presents a Dia de los Muertos art workshop from 3-4:30 pm in the TCFA Art Lab downstairs (all ages, free to attend - donations appreciated). Upstairs from 4:30-7:30 pm, the Trumansburg PTO will sell food and beverages along with providing free music and dancing.

Choose from delicious, authentic Latino-Carribean dishes prepared by local parent Henry Arias (Uncle Reggie's Sumpin' Spanish). Pre-orders are appreciated and will be taken through 10/18 by visiting https://tburgpto.com/latin-american-fiesta/ . Pick up to go meals or stay to eat there and enjoy Latin American music and dancing!

“Into the Wild(e)” —the 39th ANNUAL FALL INVITATIONAL ART SHOW at TRUMANSBURG CONSERVATORY

The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA) is pleased to announce its 39th annual Fall Invitational, this year titled “Into the Wild(e).” Curated by Marina Delaney, the exhibit features the work of six artists all of whom bring aspects of wildness to their work. The show takes place from October 14 through November 19. A gallery talk will be held on Sunday, November 19 at 3pm. Gallery hours are Fridays, 10am - 3pm and Sundays, 1-5pm.

The Opening Gala is Saturday evening, October 14, from 7-9pm. This event is free and open to the public with live jazz by Chris White on cello and Dave Davies on guitar; wine and light refreshments will be served. A performance/installation “The Lion” by Ben Marlan will also take place in the balcony with Aaron Arlinghaus during the event. A video of the performance will be on display for the duration of the show.

The concept for “Into the Wild(e)” is an exploration of “wildness” as descriptor, as behavior, and as state of being. All participating artists — Mary Ann Bowman, Warren Bunn, Nicole Costa, Ben Marlan, Alice Muhlback, and William Roberts — bring elements of these themes to their work. Interspersed throughout the exhibit are quotes on art by Oscar Wilde. Says curator Delaney, “As I thought more about the ideas I wished to convey through this exhibit —namely, how art changes and shapes our understanding of the world around us — Wilde’s famous quote, ‘Life imitates Art’ came to mind. The synchronicity was too good to pass up. Wilde on Wild!” All of the quotes have been chosen specifically for the paintings and sculpture on display, as well as Marlan’s piece.

Mary Ann Bowman says of her work, “The inspiration that comes to me is more a feeling than an object. If clay is the easiest material to use I scribble some lines in my notebook to make the feeling more visible. So it has always been a dance between the available materials and how able I am to put forth the feeling. I only recently was able to articulate the point of all this. It is to elicit a smile or even laughter from the viewer.”

Warren Bunn II is a local museum professional, painter and musician. An artist since his earliest memories, he studied fine art and art history (BA, Hartwick College) and Museum Studies (MA, School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University). Formerly the Registrar at The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, he is now the Senior Manager, Collections and Exhibitions at The Corning Museum of Glass. Warren continues to create and exhibit his work. Although loaded with his own personal symbolism, he is most interested in having the viewer craft the tale, shaped by their own emotions and experiences.

Nicole Costa was born in Baltimore and is a self-taught artist. An early interest in recycled materials sparked a technique of painting with acrylics on newspaper -- a method that still defines her practice. By painting on salvaged materials —newspaper and cardboard— the work connects the everyday with the sublime through a childlike aesthetic informed by geometric shapes, idiosyncratic color combinations, and simple words. The use of re-purposed materials combined with an accessible visual language creates an opening for the viewer. From this state, the subconscious mind is more readily called forth to receive the healing potential of the work — be it spiritual, political, personal or cultural.

Ben Marlan says of his work, “Installation and performance art are more intriguing to me at this point in my life/artistic journey. A live participant within the installation makes the possibility of greater understanding and closer connection between exhibit and onlooker all the better. The contrast between wild and mundane, and all the definitions and judgments in between, are an endless source of inspiration.” As Marlan’s installations are site specific, the piece for “Into the Wild(e)” will “express the ridiculous beauty of what’s wild about nothing.”

Alice Muhlback says of her work, “I love to make simple line drawings of my thoughts and feelings. I am a visual thinker, a cartoonist, graphic designer and illustrator. Currently I create a world of characters in paint, cardboard and recycled wood.” Visit her website at spiritandkitsch.com .

William Roberts is an artist who works and lives in Aurora, New York. His work is informed by his love of birds, horses, and the environment. Says Roberts, "Art is essential. It is intellectual and spiritual sustenance." During his forty-plus year academic career, Roberts taught painting and drawing at Kent State University, Canton Art Institute, Auburn Correctional Facility and Moravia Correctional Facility, and Wells College — where he also served as director of the Wells College String Room Art Gallery. A selection of his one-person, group, juried, and invitational exhibitions includes Cornell University Herbert F. Every October, Cayuga Arts Collective, TCFA’s sponsored organization, hosts a Draw-a-thon at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts where the public is invited to draw for an afternoon. Art materials are provided along with still lifes and live costumed models. This event is registered with The Big Draw , an international festival that takes place all over the world throughout the month of October to celebrate the universal language of drawing. This year CayAC received a Community Arts Partnership grant for "Draw-a-thon Goes Wild!” which will take place on Sunday, October 22, 2-5pm. In keeping with the themes of the exhibit, this event will focus on drawing with paint and feature two Ithaca-based artists Warren Bunn (who is also in the show) and Charlotte Ghiorse/the house of Choclet — both of whom will provide instruction at 2:15-3:15pm and 3:30-4:30pm respectively. A $10 donation is suggested for adults and a $5 donation is suggested for children with all proceeds from the event going towards TCFA’s capital campaign which is currently raising funds to restore their historic building. All levels of experience are welcome and encouraged.

Curator Marina Delaney will present a gallery talk “Into the Wild(e) Unpacked" at the close of the exhibit which will focus on the Oscar Wilde quotes included in the show - their meaning and continued relevance, as demonstrated in the work on view. The talk will be on Sunday, November 19, 3pm, followed by a closing reception.

Gallery hours are Fridays, 10am-3pm and Sundays, 1-5pm. This gong and gong bath workshop will include Celestial Communications, a style of seated movement that helps bring on a state of relaxation.

A pathway to easily explore the benefits of meditation. Gongs and gong baths offer a super easy way to slow down brain activity and thoughts to lower stress levels almost instantly. In this workshop, we will discuss how different brainwaves create different thought patterns and how sound can create overall harmony in our bodies.

The workshop will include Celestial Communications, a style of seated movement that helps bring on a state of relaxation. The vibrations of the gongs will wash over you, leading you to a state of profound relaxation and healing. After the gong bath, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and a chance to experience playing the gongs themselves.Profound breakthroughs can occur during a gong bath, so you may want to bring a journal to make notes at the end of this event.

Gong Master Caryn Sheckler has been playing gongs for about 10 years. She has studied with internationally renown Gong Masters Don Conreaux and Mike Tamboro. Rulebreaker. Trailblazer. Visionary. Phenomenon. And yet, even the breathless plaudits of the world press don’t quite do him justice. When Preston Reed picks up an acoustic guitar, words will fail you.

To watch Reed perform is to witness the bending of reality. The New York master tweaks the nose of musical convention, pokes the eye of received wisdom and burns the rulebook of the past. Using an evolution of the two-handed acoustic technique he pioneered in 1987, he fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion that integrates the breathtaking potential of the guitar body. The power and depth of his original compositions are as unique as the man’s execution, from his roots in blues, rock, funk and jazz to explorations in Middle Eastern and neo-classical styles, Reed's music embraces familiar sounds in a fresh and original way. Preston Reed doesn’t need a band. He is the band.

Over 30 years after his idiosyncratic style was born, Reed’s seismic global impact has created a sea of guitarists playing in his style, many of them inspired by 1994’s hit instructional DVD, The Guitar Of Preston Reed: Expanding The Realm Of Acoustic Playing. Today at the height of his game, Reed's recordings and live performances still define the sound of the pioneering compositional guitar genre he invented over a quarter century ago. The studio is his playground, but the road is Reed’s natural habitat. This is a man in motion. His music represents a border-hopping universal language, and fittingly, tour bookings have drawn him across the planet, for performances that leave cultural ripples in their wake, from Europe to Australia, China to the US and beyond.

Reed’s musical journey has endless twists and turns, but there’s one distinct line in the sand. It was drawn in the summer of 1987, as the guitarist sat in his Minneapolis apartment and wracked his brain for a way to escape his musical rut. Until that point, Reed’s path had been familiar. As a child of the ’60s, he cites his earliest memory as The Rolling Stones’ hit The Last Time, whose classic lick led him to early flirtations with the ukulele and a grounding in basic chords courtesy of his father. He wrote his first song at eight – a number called The Lonely Night – before a course of regimented classical lessons wilted his passion.

But fate wasn’t finished with Preston Reed. At 15, the bug bit again, as Reed attended a Hot Tuna show in New York and was floored by the bluesy fretwork of Jorma Kaukonen. That night, his guitar was retrieved from the closet and took up permanent residence on his lap, with Reed drawing inspiration from acoustic legends like John Fahey and Leo Kottke, developing his own voice along the way. He was still just 17 when whispers of his talent buzzed through the music circuit following a live debut in support of beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Institute.

Starting with 1979’s Acoustic Guitar, a volley of thrilling albums spread Reed’s reputation, and by 1988 he had signed a major deal with MCA. But behind closed doors, the guitarist was frustrated. Though spellbinding by any standard, his playing had reached a plateau; his muse held in a stranglehold by the physical limitations of the instrument. Then the thunderbolt struck. Reed wiped his technique clean, stepped into the void and made his first attempt at the two-handed fretboard attack that would change his trajectory forever. Creatively and commercially, things would never be the same again.

If Reed were the type of musician to look back, he could reflect on four decades of glories, including gigs with Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt, burgeoning sales of his 16 (and counting) studio albums, sold-out venues across various continents, untold hits on YouTube and the praise of both the man on the street and fellow six-string pioneers like Al DiMeola and Michael Hedges. If he were a statistician, he might refer to the 1997 live satellite broadcast on Turkish television that saw an audience of 120 million in 17 countries flood the switchboards after his performance.

But Reed doesn’t deal in nostalgia. Some 31 years after he changed the face of the acoustic guitar, this trailblazing artist still tours and records with a passion that flows into the hearts, heads and feet of his audiences.

Preston Reed is an artist with a four-decade habit of defying expectation at every turn, nobody knows where his journey will take him next – not even the man himself. The one thing we know for sure is that it’ll be one hell of a ride…

Dora started her over half century career as a painter in 1956. Her work was usually abstract but always inspired by the natural world. She was captivated by the infinite variety of forms and colors in nature and their repetition in water, sand, stone and wood. She enjoyed local and regional gallery and museum shows and was particularly excited about interpreting what she experienced in her many visits to Taughannock State Park, Cape Cod, the Grand Canyon, and the surreal landscape of Utah. Internationally acclaimed guitarist Loren Barrigar will appear with his son LJ Barrigar at TCFA as part of our Summer Guitar Series. LJ is an up-and-coming guitarist influenced by Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins.

Loren started playing guitar when he was only four years old, and by the time he was six played the Chet Atkins hit “Yackety Axe” in front of thousands of country music fans at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He went on to study with Chet’s brother, Jimmy Atkins, which led to a touring career with his family band from Nashville to Las Vegas. Since settling down in Central New York, he has been in constant demand as a studio musician.

Loren's finely-honed songwriting skills have launched his melodies on NBC’s #1 rated show “ER”, “The Young and The Restless” and on a Christmas CD with BB King and Patti Labelle.

In 2010, Loren made a guest appearance at The Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) in Nashville with Mark Mazengarb. His solo concerts include favorite songs from seven decades, as well as his originals all featuring exciting guitar work and memorable vocal stylings. Announcing a special cultural event “The Color of Sound in Song”, a partnership between Opera Ithaca and Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA) which will take place on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 3pm. Sponsored by the CFCU Community Credit Union, this event will be held at the Conservatory in conjunction with the exhibit “Synesthesia: The Color of Sound”, the seventh annual Cayuga Arts Collective (CayAC) spring show curated by CayAC founders Domenica Brockman and Marina Delaney. The exhibit explores the relationship between art and music and runs through July 28, 2023.

“The Color of Sound in Song” will be a unique gallery recital where operatic voices serenade the audience through vocal compositions that reflect and respond to the gallery show. Accompanied by Richard Montgomery, on piano, Lynn Craver, co-founder of Opera Ithaca, along with members of Opera Ithaca’s innovative Apprentice Artists Program will sing from an Impressionistic repertoire including works by Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss. The recital will feature a dialogue between singers and the show curators who together will explore visual and musical connections. This event is open to the public and admission is free. Wine and light refreshments will be served.

TCFA serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Cayuga Arts Collective a group of about seventy member-artists from the Finger Lakes region. Founded in 2017, the mission of the Cayuga Arts Collective is to build community by fostering creativity in the visual arts.

Opera Ithaca is a professional opera company based in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 2014 is now in its ninth season.

The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo, comprised of Valerie and Benedict Turner, are ambassadors of Country Blues music and the Piedmont style of fingerpicking. Their mission is to help bring awareness to this unique aspect of African-American culture, and to the contributions of early blues artists, through performing and teaching.

They have been entertaining audiences both domestically and abroad and are much loved wherever they go. As 2018 inductees into the New York Blues Hall of Fame, this husband-and-wife duo feel that "there are stories to tell, people to remember, and things that must be said"; so, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song.

A Piedmont Blūz concert isn’t just music – it’s an experience as they transport you back to the 1920s and 1930s, the hey-day of acoustic Country Blues music. In addition to performing songs from that time-frame, they introduce each piece with an interesting anecdote about either the composer, the time period, or the song itself.

TCFA has been awarded a matching grant by the New York State Council of the Arts to renovate, restore, and improve accessibility to our instruction, performance, and exhibition space. To celebrate this opportunity, Peggy Haine and the Lowdown Alligator Jass Band will perform in a one-of-a-kind benefit concert filled with jazz and spectacle on Saturday evening, May 6. All proceeds will go directly to the Capital Campaign Match!

The band started in 1976 as a duo with tuba player Dane Marion and Peggy on piano and vocals, and grew to a seven-piece group, adding one by one Dane’s IC classmate clarinetist Brian Earle, trombonist Dave Davies, drummer Michael Wellen who also played a little trumpet, cornettist Johnny Russo (later replaced by Ithaca College trumpet professor Frank Campos), David Frumkin on violin and banjo. Over the years others stepped in, including bassist Harry Aceto who now joins us on guitar and banjo. Dan May, a graduate student at Cornell in composition relieved Peggy at the piano (so she could concentrate on feather boa manipulation), and after him they were joined by the spectacular jazz pianist Molly MacMillan.

On Friday, April 28th, 2023 at 7:30 in the evening, the public is invited to a recital of Bill Gregg’s music students in the auditorium of the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts.

Pieces will run the gamut from piano beginners (Atticus Shear) to more advanced piano (Mahkia Gumaer), classical guitar (Nicholas Haynes, Wesley Millspaugh), electric guitar (Aaron Stager), and blues guitar (Everett Franke). Students will also present pieces for banjo (Darcy Rose Martin), fiddle (Nick Sledziona), and last, but not least, ukulele (Sylvie Simone).

Bill last presented a recital in 2019, before the pandemic shutdown. Come out and support music at TCFA and hear the amazing skills of Bill’s talented students.

The Finger Lakes Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators spring show opening and reception - Saturday, April 8, 2023 from 4-6 pm

Join us for the annual exhibit by the GNSI, this year titled "Weird and Wonderful", celebrating the unusual and diverse range of flora and fauna around us. The artists in the group represent artists working in a wide range of styles and media, both 2d and sculptural. The opening will feature live music from the Maplewood Jazz Trio and refreshments, open to all!

This planet is weird and wonderful – from its geologic formations to the plants and animals that inhabit it. The members of the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators would like to share with you, through their artwork, some of these organisms. Art is one of the earliest forms of communication, and illustrations continue to be an excellent way to share knowledge. Our artists hope you can appreciate the weird in this wonderful world. Funding for this event provided in part by the GNSI Education Fund and GNSI-Finger Lakes Chapter.

TCFA will be offering an opportunity to meet and sketch with artists of the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) Elizabeth Morales, InShik Lee and Lucy Gagliardo on Sunday April 16, from 2-4pm. This will be a free event and is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Guild and its work in scientific illustration. Specimens for drawing will be supplied (including three live owls!) and drawing materials will be provided free of charge. The event takes place in the beautiful, light-filled auditorium of the Trumansburg Conservatory.

The sketch event coincides with the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators member show at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts. This show features diverse works from group members in a variety of media and has open gallery hours on Fridays and Sundays 1-5 pm. Show runs through May 12.

The “Sketch with the Artists” event is co- sponsored by the GNSI-Finger Lakes Chapter.

A rogue planet—"The Outsider"— enters the Solar System and is on a collision course with Earth. When the Outsider takes up an orbit round Earth, an expedition is launched to make a close study of the new planet and to learn something of its underground base. The phantom planet begins spiraling inward toward the Earth, creating hurricanes and storms, and the beginning of the end appears to be near. A plan is hatched to launch an all-out attack against the planet in a race against time to save Earth from total destruction!

Phil Hardy describes the film as one of the “most humorous, inventive, stylish” films in 60’s Italian science fiction.

TCFA will present Serenade - Compositions for Solo Guitar, a concert of solo guitar pieces
composed and performed by Bill Gregg, on Sunday, March 26, 2023 from 4-6PM in the auditorium of the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts.

There is no admission charge for the concert. Instead, we’re asking for donations to fund the conservatory’s mission of promoting the arts in our community.

Bill Gregg began writing guitar studies for his students in the early 1980’s. Since then, he has continued to compose and perform a wide range of guitar music. He has several CDs that offer guitar improvisations with electronic synthesizers, including one album of live performances at the Trumansburg Conservatory.

For this program he will present selections from his solo works composed over the last forty-five years. The pieces range from the first simple guitar studies meant to teach technique and music theory to more complex and dramatic 12 string and finger style instrumentals in alternate guitar tunings. Bill’s philosophy of composition is to write pieces that emphasize simplicity, beauty and emotional feeling instead of pyrotechnical displays of virtuosity. In this program he will demonstrate that philosophy in a variety of rarely heard solo guitar pieces.

Class will be an exploration of perception and imagination and how we express nature and ourselves with color.

We will explore new ways to look at nature and everything around us. At the beginning of the 20th Century art had a new emphasis on color perception and sensation. In this class we will explore our own sensations and imagination while drawing in color. During this class we will be drawing still life’s and interiors. Please bring what ever color materials you are comfortable drawing with: Acrylic paint, pastel, water color, oil crayon, your other choice (I would discourage colored pencils). From Upstate New York, Oona Grady (fiddle/viola/vocals) and James Gascoyne (guitar/banjo/vocals) play and sing North Atlantic dance tunes and folk songs.

Steeped in Irish music for as far back as she can remember, Oona spent many years living in Cork, Ireland, where she honed her skills as a fiddle player and Irish music specialist. Upon moving back to her hometown of Ithaca, NY, Oona immersed herself in the local traditional music scene and incorporated old time and Cajun tunes into her repertoire.

Growing up outside Louisville, KY, James was surrounded by music from an early age; radio, vinyl records, church music, and live concerts were a part of daily life. Finding his own musical style as an adult, James always keeps his ears open for sounds – new, old, familiar, or strange. While singing and playing guitar and banjo with Drank The Gold, he delves into the traditions of American old time and Irish dance tunes, while keeping true to his borderless, experimental musical roots. A variety pastries, teas, and coffees will be served as Lisa Fenwick presents a program on both Celtic lever harp and pedal harp. The concert will include a variety of music styles with a strong emphasis on Celtic music in celebration of St. Patrick's Day week. Lisa will engage with the audience and share her love for the instrument by sharing a bit about how the instrument works and a bit of information about how the harp has evolved over time.

Lisa Fenwick is an active harp performer throughout the region. When not playing harp, Lisa teaches harp, flute, and piano to all ages. Originally trained as a flutist, Lisa has served as an adjunct professor of music at SUNY Cortland and was on the faculty of the Community School of Music and Arts in Ithaca for over 20 years. She has maintained her own teaching studio since college as well as running and teaching Kindermusik of Ithaca for 14 years.

Lisa was originally drawn to the harp when playing in a flute and harp duo in college and she began to study harp right around this time. Lisa has played with the harp ensemble Harps on the Susquehanna and in the harp duo Enchantment as well as with other local performing groups but now most often performs throughout the region as a solo harpist. She has played numerous solo recitals throughout the area and often plays for weddings and other special events. She teaches harp both online and in her Ithaca studio.

Author Barbara Page will be giving a talk about her book titled Book Marks: An Artist’s Card Catalog as well as her process. Her presentation will illustrate how her long term art projects ended up in a very different form than she initially imagined. Copies of Barbara's book will also be available for purchase, and all proceeds will go to the Conservatory. Refreshments will be served.

Book Marks is an ongoing project consisting of hundreds of compact artworks filed in a two-drawer library case. In 2008 I began illustrating obsolete library checkout cards as a colorful system for remembering the books they represented. Upon finishing a book, I would transform a three-by-five-inch card into miniature collages or drawings recording my impressions, with the book’s title and name of the author at the top. The images are intentionally eclectic since every manuscript dictates its unique personality through style, content, period, and setting. I soon started making these artworks for stories read long ago, eventually recreating seven decades of my reading history.

In 2021 Book Marks: An Artist’s Card Catalog was published by Bauer & Dean. It is a blend of both art book and autobiography, showing us how significant books can leave indelible impressions on our lives. It contains plates of over 430 of the library cards, interwoven with personal accounts of my childhood, the mid-blowing Berkeley years, adventures as a pilot and world traveler, as well as life after death, which together illuminate how our memories of books are anchored not only to the story itself, but also to events and images beyond the book’s cover.

Barbara Page is an artist, former triathlete, and avid reader. She received her MFA from Cornell University. Her work ranges from multi-media paintings to large museum installations, including a 140” long pedestrian bridge at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Natural Sciences and the expansive Rock of Ages, Sands of Time mural at the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY. Page is a fellow of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and was artist-in-residence at the Golden Foundation. Her love affair with printed matter led to the Book Marks project, first exhibited at The Center for Book Arts in New York City. Her card catalog, along with Book Marks, won Best of Show in the Art of the Book, an international juried exhibit at the Rochester Central Library in 2022.

This session introduces simple and in-depth exercises to awaken and invite the resources that your body holds to support movement. We will explore these exquisite resources by engaging specific imagery, tactile studies, long passes for letting new movement possibilities arise, supported at times by music. In our daily life activities, we often go quickly out – adrenalized - to meet the world around us. In this class we’ll consider ways of listening before motoring, and if there is time, play with tuning the shared field. Movement might range from soft and fluid to fast and vigorous, while engaging your body and curiosity. For beginners and experienced movers alike. All bodies are welcome. Please bring a blanket.

Julie Nathanielsz, MFA, is a movement artist working where affect, identity, nature and place collide. While living in Austin, TX, she founded and co-founded several projects centering dance improvisation in performance. Julie has taught dance and contemplative practice for 20 years.

Discover an international singer who captivated royalty in Europe and defied the conscience of 1939 America. Watch rare archival footage and hear audio recordings exploring her life and career from the Metropolitan Opera to the State Department. Marian Anderson’s singing and speaking voice are heard throughout the documentary, providing new understanding of the woman behind the music. Directed by Emmy- and Peabody Award-winner Rita Coburn. Spotlighting Anderson’s voice and point of view, the documentary draws from 34 cassette tapes of interviews recorded in the 1950s, when she was preparing to write her memoir, “My Lord, What a Morning,” and other archival interviews. Anchored by key performances in her career, American Masters – Marian Anderson: The Whole World in Her Hands shows how her quiet genius and breathtaking voice set the stage for Black performers in classical music, and a louder voice for civil rights. Additionally, with unprecedented access to the Marian Anderson Estate, the documentary draws on rare audio recordings, photographs and personal correspondence to and from family and friends, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Josephine Baker and Langston Hughes.

“Previous documentaries centered around her life without her own voice. That’s what sets our documentary apart,” said director Rita Coburn. “Marian Anderson directly discusses her personal experiences, allowing the viewer to explore history from her point of view.”

The film also features new interviews with fellow Black opera singers, mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves and tenor George Shirley, who also served on the film’s team of humanities advisers. Additional interviews include Anderson’s friends, contemporaries and those she influenced, including J’nai Bridges (mezzo-soprano), Angela Brown (soprano), Martina Arroyo (soprano), Sandra Grymes (Anderson’s niece), Laura Roosevelt (Eleanor Roosevelt’s granddaughter), Raymond Arsenault, Ph.D., (Author, “Marian Anderson: The Sound of Freedom”) and Jillian Pirtle (National Marian Anderson Museum).

Best known for her concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, Anderson christened the Washington, D.C., landmark as a place of protest after she was discriminated against on the basis of a “whites only” concert policy at the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Constitution Hall. She garnered interracial support from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, the NAACP, Howard University and other leaders and defied the conscience of her time by performing for an integrated audience of over 75,000. The concert reached millions of radio listeners around the world and became an inspiration to the growing civil rights movement, inspiring a 10-year-old Martin Luther King, Jr., to later publish a winning oratorical citing the experience.

Affectionately known to audiences as “The Lady from Philadelphia” and “The People’s Princess,” Anderson’s career was propelled by her talent, but also steered by the limits imposed by racism and segregation. This gifted pioneer, whose strength was rooted in family and community, overcame humiliation, prejudice and financial hardship to become a voice for justice, an internationally renowned master of her craft and the first African American to sing a leading role at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Balancing her public triumph with her personal struggles and resilience, American Masters – Marian Anderson: The Whole World in Her Hands charts the impact of one of the world’s greatest singers, whose career provides a window into a time of seismic cultural change.

“Marian Anderson’s legacy creates a bridge as our society continues to sound the call for justice, recognition, reconciliation and the confrontation of racism in order to create lasting change,” said Coburn. “Her ability to create, cull and navigate a worldview, having been born in 1897 and facing down Jim Crow, gives us both hope and yet begs the question: how long will America divide itself along racial lines?”

Join us for a performance by SOUK, playing middle-eastern and Arabic, Turkish, Persian, and Greek music, ranging between hypnotic and danceable, instrumental and vocal pieces. SOUK was formed in 2010 by Nikolai Ruskin, Jesse Koennecke, and Dara Anissi, who have been performing together for over two decades. Performing on violin, oud, percussion and several other traditional instruments, they will be joined by Middle Eastern dancers Anna Horn and Alicia Free.

SOUK plays traditional Arabic and Turkish music, based on Maqam, a complex modal system with emphasis on improvisation, and Iqa, a wide variety of rhythms. Their repertoire ranges from Raqs Sharqi, the music played in cabarets for bellydance, to Muwashahat, 16th century songs that migrated from Andalusia to Aleppo, Golden Era classics by famous singers like Ohm Kalthoum and Abdel Halim Hafez, to folk music from Upper Egypt and the Black Sea region of Turkey.

Nikolai Ruskin is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in Middle Eastern music. Born in San Diego, California, Nikolai grew up in San Francisco. In 2002, Nikolai co-founded the Cornell Middle Eastern Music Ensemble with Professor Martin Hatch, of which he was Music Director until relocating to the Manhattan area in 2005. Returning to Ithaca in 2010, he formed the group SOUK with Dara Anissi, and Jesse Koennecke. Nikolai returned as Music Director for the Cornell Arabic Music Club in 2018.

Dara Anissi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1973. and came to the US at the age of 2 becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States. He started playing guitar at the age of 5 and has been playing since exploring the genres of Rock, Classical music, Jazz, and Celtic music. He currently teaches music at the Lehman Alternative Community School where he has taught students for 22 years.

Dancer Anna Horn lives in the Trumansburg area, bringing along 20+ years of studying belly dance and music with local and world renowned artists, including her mentor, Suhaila Salimpour.

Alicia Free started studying music and dance with Nikolai Ruskin and June Seaney when she was a Cornell student in 2000. Dancing to live music is a form of magic that Alicia is devoted to.

Virtuoso guitarist/composer/improviser Juanito Pascual has been called "one of the hottest flamenco guitarists in recent years" by National Public Radio, a major accolade which in this case is just the jumping off point for the Minneapolis native's musical style. His sound is a truly organic blend of a mastery of traditional and contemporary flamenco plus influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead to Miles Davis and J.S. Bach.

The Juanito Pascual Trio features two highly versatile and dynamic musicians, New York based Jose Moreno, one of the most sought after musicians in the national flamenco scene on percussion and vocals, and stunning bassist Brad Barrett (Jason Moran, Ran Blake). By combining their distinct musical backgrounds with a powerful personal chemistry, the Trio has created a fresh, exhilarating and constantly evolving sound, performing to enthralled audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad. THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY tracks a ragtag group of combat veterans in New York whose anti-war art, poetry and papermaking keep them together, despite the specter of their friend’s suicide and the ever-crystalizing fact that healing from war is sometimes an impossible mission. Produced by Acoustic Pictures, executive producer Rosario Dawson, directed by Talia Lugacy.

Meet the filmmaker and veterans involved in the film. Following the screening, TCFA will host a panel discussion to talk to the audience and answer questions about their experiences and continuing projects.

This hybrid narrative film features a supporting cast of Iraq and Vietnam veterans, as well as their original artwork, poetry, and music - and was produced over three years as an ongoing collaboration with a thriving community of veteran artists and papermakers. Through the process of shredding uniforms, writing poems, exposing their art to the public and telling stories in confidence within their group, the veterans in THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY find a way to give their suffering voice and clarity.

SYNOPSIS

Timothy Reyes (DANNY RAMIREZ) hustles through the NYC subway system. Oblivious passers-by don’t notice he is popping pills, fading, killing himself. Discovered dead on an empty train, no one knows him to be a combat veteran. His mentor, Will LaRue (SAM ADEGOKE) blames himself and wrestles with the guilt, and a resurgence of his own demons from war. His refuge: a multi-generational community of artist veterans, who make handmade paper out of military uniforms. Shredding them, pulverizing them - uniforms are reconstituted into paper, onto which the veterans express their rage, humor, memories, and hopes, in the form of art and poetry. Into this community arrives Isabelle (TALIA LUGACY) - a veteran recently returned home, only to find home more alienating and hostile than being at war. Her family and estranged mother (FRANCES FISHER) can’t fathom or accept her identity as a Marine. Will and Isabelle forge a tenuous alliance in this community of mostly white male veterans, and Isabelle’s increasing fixation on Will as some kind of savior or teacher digs directly against his private struggle to accept Timothy’s suicide and intensifies his self-blame for failing to save him. The confrontations and the bond between Will and Isabelle propel them into a deeper questioning of themselves, and into what it means, finally, to want to live.

Tom Harley Campbell is the author of Satan’s Choir (A John Burke Mystery). Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, he has been a journalist, carpenter, cabinet maker, machinist, and for many years a musician and Nashville songwriter. He lives in Trumansburg, New York.

About BLUE BOOK: Homicide detective John Burke is lured out of retirement when a young man arrives in Dayton, Ohio with a tantalizing clue to a haunting cold case – the unsolved death of a Black cop from Mississippi. As Burke digs into the case, a trail of unexplained deaths leads him to nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where Project Blue Book – the U.S. government’s long since shuttered study of UFO phenomena – rears its ugly head. Burke realizes he could be next.

BLUE BOOK is the second John Burke Mystery. It is dedicated to Karl Quintanilla, one of the authors childhood friends. Karl's father, then Maj. Hector Quintanilla, was the last director of Project Blue Book, the U.S. government's official study of UFOs, located at Wright Patterson AFB. For a journalism class assignment in 1968 (the year before the project was shut down) Harley had the opportunity to interview Hector. The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA) is pleased to announce its 38th annual Fall Invitational, this year titled “ALTERED: Changed, Repurposed, Reconsidered.” Curated by Ann Welles, the exhibit features the work of six artists all of whom challenge us to experience the familiar in new ways. The show takes place from October 15 through November 20, with gallery hours Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1-5pm

The Opening Gala is Saturday evening, October 15, from 7-9pm. This event is free and open to the public, with music by jazz pianist Alejandro Bernard-Papachryssanthou. Wine and light refreshments will be served.

Fueled by the notion that exposing us to new ideas reformulates what we already know, Ann Welles describes the genesis for the show as follows: “I was inspired by the building that houses the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts. Formerly a Baptist church, its past holds power and adds dimension to its current role in the community. I selected artists whose work can play off the building’s energy and whose practices tap into the power of the altered.”

The invited artists are:

Julianna Dougherty, a digital-based artist who utilizes 3d modeling in both ceramic and plastic 3d printing.
Ronald Gonzalez, a sculptor whose figurative works meld objects with human forms that address mortality, memory and psychic pain.
Philip Kuznicki, a multi-media artist whose collages and assemblages make use of estate sale cast-offs that, reconfigured, take on a decidedly surrealist quality.
Natalija Mijatovic, a Serbian-American artist whose work poignantly examines humanity where change is the only constant.
Gary Sczerbaniewicz, a 3d artist whose work seeks to disorient viewers through shifts in scale while combining post-Cold War imagery, cultural icons and architectural elements.
Robin Whiteman, a sculptor known for her diminutive porcelain figures that merge religious iconography and myth — creating works that are both contemplative and potent.

A gallery talk with participating artist Gary Sczerbaniewicz will be held on Sunday, November 20 at 3pm.

Described by the L.A. Times as "one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today", Pierre's name became synonymous with contemporary acoustic guitar genius, long before the terms New Age, New Acoustic Music or World Music were invented. He has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet, Bensusan is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique.

There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His "manner" of playing defies classification - crossing world, classical, jazz, traditional, folk and more. None can be isolated as simply “Brazilian”, "Arabic" or “French”; rather, they represent our world in its current state, a world sharing itself, fusing cultures together in ways we have never experienced. A pathway to easily explore the benefits of meditation. Gongs and gong baths offer a super easy way to slow down brain activity and thoughts to lower stress levels almost instantly. In this workshop, we will discuss how different brainwaves create different thought patterns and how sound can create overall harmony in our bodies.

The workshop will include Celestial Communications, a style of seated movement that helps bring on a state of relaxation. The vibrations of the gongs will wash over you, leading you to a state of profound relaxation and healing. After the gong bath, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and a chance to experience playing the gongs themselves.Profound breakthroughs can occur during a gong bath, so you may want to bring a journal to make notes at the end of this event. Please bring a mat and small blanket to make yourself cozy.

Gong Master Caryn Sheckler has been playing gongs for about 10 years. She has studied with internationally renown Gong Masters Don Conreaux and Mike Tamboro. Caryn is an internationally trained Level 2 Kundalini Yoga Instructor with 20 years experience and teaches senior fitness and chair yoga in Trumansburg.

Join us for an evening of Jazz featuring local performers Mike Titlebaum (Saxaphone), Catherine Gale (Vocals) and Nick Weiser (Piano). The trio will be performing "The Songs We Love" featuring works from the Great American Songbook, including tunes by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as the Beatles, the Beach Boys and Joni Mitchell. More recently Weiser and Gale have been performing a series of duets by Tony Bennett with pianist Bill Evans and the trio will share these new arrangements at the Conservatory.

Mike performs with the Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble and has performed with Cab Calloway, Natalie Cole, Mel Torme and Branford Marsalis. Catherine Gale was raised in a family of musicians and has sung with many groups in Central New York, including the Ithaca Jazz Quartet, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra. Nick Weiser has dazzled audiences around the United States and in Europe with performances at the Santiago de Cuba International Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, New York City’s “Prez Fest,” and Carnegie Hall.

Reverend Robert Jones, Sr. is a singer, songwriter, storyteller and self-taught award-winning multi-instrumentalist. He plays guitar, harmonica, mandolin, banjo and fiddle using folk, blues, spirituals and other American Roots music to champion the history, beauty and power of our shared culture.

A lifelong Detroiter, Rev. Jones has been performing professionally for nearly 30 years throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He has entertained and educated audiences of all ages in schools, colleges, libraries, union halls, prisons, churches and civil rights organizations. His deep love for traditional African American and American music is shared in live performances that interweave timeless stories with original and traditional songs. At the heart of his message is the belief that our cultural diversity tells a story that should celebrate, not just tolerate.

This class concentrates on providing a solid introduction and foundation to the aspiring blues fingerpicker. We’ll concentrate on techniques for developing monotonic, alternating and walking bass lines. We’ll explore how blues players move first position chord shapes up the neck in order to add variety to your playing as well as to play in different keys. We’ll also explore how the “CAGED” system of chords which can be applied to traditional styles of country blues. We will do all this while learning some key tunes of seminal bluesguitarists of the past. All tunes will be in standard tuning. While everyone is welcome to come to the class, a solid knowledge of basic first position guitar chords would be most helpful. Also, since this is a fingerpicking class, the use of a thumb, fingerpicks, and a steel string guitar is recommended.

Ithaca, New York’s The Dart Brothers are filled with ambition and honesty and a growing signature sound with a rock n’ roll foundation and just the right amount of pop and alt country polish.

Hailing from all around the Ithaca area, their 5-piece sound is essentially comprised of guitars, drums, bass and vocals. While their music is original, their influences are familiar, and range from the Jayhawks and REM to the Beatles and The Band, from Dawes and Pink Floyd to The Guess Who and Motown. The Darts are relatively new on the scene, but each of the members are alumni from other bands: The Bay-area’s The Naked Barbies, The New York Rock, Cats Elbow, Radio London, Lil Anne & Hot Cayenne, and a number of others in and around our area.

Singer/guitarist Todd Edmonds, bassist Rick Kline, drummer Dan Lashkoff, lead guitarist Rob Van Vleet, and rhythm guitarist Andy Russell all contribute to the songwriting task, adding layers to material each member might bring to the group. It is a process that has yielded some really great collaborations.

A global pandemic and climate change are affecting our entire planet. Political chaos, social injustice and war have only added to our personal and collective anxieties. In many ways, we are all living through a time of turmoil and fear, grief and loss. Yet, for some, the past couple of years have also offered unexpected gifts. As a group of artists, many of whom have been working together for 20 years, The Quilt Divas needed to find new ways to connect with each other, and individually found opportunities for introspection, sanctuary, and creativity.

Natural science illustration involves attentive observation and careful study of the natural world. Through visual language, artists help make research more accessible to wider audiences, expand our awareness of and appreciation for the natural world, and hopefully encourage us to support sustainability initiatives. It's all about taking the time to look and appreciate the wonders that surround us.

In this exhibit you will see the diverse interpretations of Finger Lakes artists and their mediums of expression, and how their observations lead to new discoveries and a deeper appreciation for the natural environment. These observations require careful study and can be time intensive, but the rewards are incredibly satisfying.

The public is invited to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of nonviolence through hands-on education, art, writing activities, and discussion for people of all ages. Featuring open mic readings of Martin Luther King Jr’s speeches.

The intention of the event is to bring people together to celebrate Dr. King’s life. Participants will be invited to join in activities presented in collaboration with many area nonprofit organizations:

AntiRacists in Enfield will facilitate a guided space for participants to reflect on the influence of racism and white privilege in contemporary society.
Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts will be hosting an interactive art activity for teens.
Postcards and Coffee will share materials and tools for connecting with public officials, and

opportunities to help fight voter suppression in communities of color.

Tompkins County Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (JEDI) will present their video of youth sharing their vision of what a more equitable Tompkins County looks and feels like to them. JEDI will provide the opportunity for young people to share additional thoughts on equity via written statements, drawings, video, and audio recordings.
On Earth Peace will introduce participants to the six principles of nonviolence that are based on Dr. King’s writing and speeches.
Ulysses Philomathic Library will offer a selection of relevant books for all ages for browsing and borrowing.
Trumansburg Middle School Social Justice Club students will engage young participants in coloring activities related to Martin Luther King Jr.
Trumansburg Area Churches (Ecumenical Council) will show intersectionality artwork.

Participants will be invited to share segments of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches via an open mic throughout the two hour event.

Picasso, Matisse, and the Cone Sisters of Baltimore: A personal perspective

Over a period of fifty years, sisters Claribel and Etta Cone amassed one of the most acclaimed collections of late-nineteenth and twentieth-century art in America. Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta were two halves of an idiosyncratic team--Claribel bold and assertive and Etta reflective and sensitive--who used the fortunes of their German Jewish immigrant family to seek out works that inspired and pleased them, regardless of public opinion and with only self-taught expertise.

This lecture delves into Claribel's and Etta's world, following the sisters through personal stories as they travel to meet some of the artists whose works would turn their adjoining apartments into a gallery. They bought art by Picasso and Matisse, and others, whom they came to know well. The sisters' experiences in Paris from 1901 through the 1920s provide an exceptional view of the bright artistic ferment in the city at that time. They were two Victorian women from Baltimore buying avant-garde masterpieces, attending salons with friends Gertrude and Leo Stein, and building a collection that would initially enrage the conservative people around them. Only with time would their keen eyes and unwavering taste prove them right.

Lecturer and author Nancy Ramage, an art historian, is the Charles A. Dana Professor of the Humanities and Arts Emerita at Ithaca College, where she won the Teaching Excellence Award. Among her many grants and honors, she is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in London, and a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. She specializes in Greek and Roman art, and the history of collecting.

Her book The Cone Sisters of Baltimore: Collecting at Full Tilt (with Ellen B. Hirschland) tells the story of Ramage’s great-great aunts, Claribel and Etta Cone, who were close friends of Gertrude Stein, Matisse and Picasso.

SOUK will perform "Alf Leila wi Leila", a famous Egyptian song composed for the great Um Kalthoum in 1969 by Baligh Hamdi, with poetry by Mursi Jamal Aziz. The title translates to "One Thousand Nights and a Night", and speaks of love and longing. SOUK will be joined by Mark Karlsen on saxophone as well as student and faculty members of the Cornell Arabic Music Club, including Syrian qanoun player Majd Aldaye, vocalist Dana Slayton, and percussionist Grez Ezra. SOUK will be rounding out the set with a number of other pieces from their repertoire of Arabic and Turkish music, as well as some original compositions by Dara Anissi.

SOUK was founded by Nikolai Ruskin along with Dara Anissi, and Jesse Konnecke in 2010 to perform traditional Arab and Turkish music on oud, nay, violin, riq and darbuka.

Join us for a piano spectacular! The Krantz family of pianists (Sabine, Alex, Emma, Ty, Andreia and Soren) will share music by Beethoven, Chopin, Scriabin, Blumenfeld, Grieg and Scarlatti as well as holiday favorites for 2 and 4 hand piano.

The Krantz family is based in the Syracuse area. Mother Sabine started piano lessons at age 8 and didn’t stop until she graduated from college in Oslo with a bachelor’s degree in piano pedagogy and performance. She teaches piano and voice lessons and accompanies local events. Father Alex is mostly self taught on piano.

Their four children have all followed in their parents musical footsteps; Emma (21) who played her first “twinkle little tao” on the piano with only her right pointer finger at age 4. Ty (19) started playing as soon as he could sit at the piano. He recently transferred to LeMoyne college to complete his bachelor’s degree in math. Andreia (17) is a full-time music student at OCC in her Senior year of high school. She is doing voice as her major instrument, also studying piano. Finally Soren (15) started lessons with mom, but switched to John Spradlings studio in the fall of 2020.:

Hiroya Tsukamoto is an innovative guitarist and composer who fuses folk, jazz, and world music. Born and raised in Japan, in 2000 he received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and came to the U.S. Hiroya has been performing internationally including Blue Note in NYC and Japanese National Television. In 2018, he won 2nd place on International Finger Style Guitar Championship.

Tsukamoto’s instrumental abilities are indeed breathtaking and astounding, but his performances are so much more than that. He has the unique capability of engaging an audience through a personable and genuine approach that transfixes his audience and almost transcends his capabilities as a guitarist. Audience members will be mesmerized; Tsukamoto plays with an effortless skill on the guitar and a repertoire that will have you traveling the world, not to mention experiencing new sounds with his own compositions.

Interested in learning the fine art of Gyotaku  (a.k.a.-Japanese fish printing)

Certified Master Gyotaku Printmaker Mutsugoroh (Stephen DiCerbo) will teach you the history, culture and process of Direct Gyotaku (Chokusetsu-ho). Participants will be printing with actual fish. Hear about the natural history and local significance of the fish you will work with.   Learn how to prepare the fish, and use it to create a “printing block” from which you will create Gyotaku fish prints on Washi (Japanese paper). Delve into the compositional considerations of the work you will produce.

Learn how to add the fish’s color to the print through a tinting process developed by Master Mutsugoroh. Finally, bring life to your subject by adding the eye to the final print.

   This is a full day workshop with a one hour lunch break. Bring a lunch to eat in the studio.  All materials are included, class limit of 10 participants.

About Stephen DiCerbo

Stephen DiCerbo grew up wandering about and exploring the Adirondack Mountain Region of upstate New York. Ever enchanted by the outdoor surroundings he seeks out, Stephen expresses this wonder of the natural world in the art he produces. He obtained an Associate of Science Degree in Fish and Wildlife Technology in the early eighties, and years later, pursued and completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Illustration.

He has traveled around the Northeastern United States and New England; North Carolina, Florida, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington State, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia in a quest for more knowledge and experiences in varied environmental settings.

He has also traveled to Japan and studied with a Master Gyotaku Printmaker, Mineo Ryuka Yamamoto to refine and advance his technique in Kansetsu-ho and Chokusetsu-ho Japanese Fish printing. After over 10 years of study with Sensei Yamamoto, he was honored with the title of Master Gyotaku printmaker and given the Artist’s name, Mutsugoroh.

Artist Statement:

“ It has been said that one of the greatest values of fishing is that it presents a never-ending series of opportunities for hope. In the same sense, the artistic subject matter of fish and the environs they inhabit provide me with unlimited variations of color and form to work with.  The pursuit of recreating a visual accounting of these creatures, as well as other of nature’s subjects, on paper and canvas offers me ongoing access to the learning process. It allows me satisfaction in bringing home to the observer a surge of excitement, a reflection on nature’s wonders, or an emotional touchstone connected to their own experiences in the wild. “

Currently, Stephen works out of Stormtree Studio in North Hudson, New York, in the Central Adirondack area, near the High Peaks region. He practices Natural Science Illustration as well as fine art and printmaking, specializing in Ichthyologic subject matter. Solo guitarist David Rogers will perform on Friday, October 22 at 7:00pm at The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts.

Termed, ‘a prominent guitarist,’ by the New York Times and praised by The Washington Post for his ‘astonishingly florid’ improvisations, David Rogers presents an evening of Spanish music, Up-Tempo Latin, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Rolling Stones’, Roxy Music, Cheap Trick and Carla Bley songs, as well as music by J.S. Bach and original compositions.

An endorsing artist for Aquila Strings (Italy), his music has been featured in major guitar magazines such as Fingerstyle Guitar in the United States and Akustic Gitarre, in Germany. His solo and ensemble performances have been broadcast on American National Public Radio and Bayrische Rundfunk.

Romanoff Redux

The show runs through Sunday November 21 with open gallery hours every Friday and Sunday from noon to 4pm.

TCFA is honored to feature a solo show of Trumansburg resident Victoria Romanoff for the Fall Invitational. Romanoff's intense colors and strong composition illustrate an individual style that has both humor and warmth. Her use of recycled wood, paper and metal elements create references to unbuilt monuments and forgotten or destroyed worlds.

Victoria Romanoff is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and has an MFA from Cornell University. She is a long-time resident of Tompkins County. While pursuing a professional life in historic preservation Victoria has also continued her love of the visual arts, participating in both national and international exhibits. Her work can be found in the collections of the Cornell Herbert F. Johnson Museum and the Worcester Museum of Fine Arts, among others.

Our opening event will be an in-person outdoor gathering at the Conservatory under a tent on the TCFA lawn with wine, refreshments and old-world European jazz band French ConeXion. There will be a limit of 50 attendees (masks required) inside the gallery to view the show at any one time. There is no charge for admission.

During this workshop, participants will learn the basics of tapestry weaving using an upcycled frame. The first part of the workshop will be spent warping, while the second part will be dedicated to designing and weaving. Because weaving is a lengthy process, participants will be able to finish their pieces at home.

Participants will be provided with a wooden frame for the workshop. If participants have their own tapestry frame loom, or yarn they would like to use, they are welcome to bring these as well.

Jose Buenaventura Gonzalez is a master weaver and organic dyer from Oaxaca, Mexico. He has participated in The Smithsonian Native Arts Market in both New York City and Washington D.C., The National Geographic Summer Stage in New York City, The Global Health Marketplace in Washington, D.C., and for eight seasons the Cultural Survival Bazaars in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where he demonstrated weaving to the public. He has taught several workshops on natural dyeing in Mexico and the US, including a week-long workshop at Instituto Allende, San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato. He has also done local art shows in Ithaca.

Jose learned weaving from his father at age ten. He began using natural dyes exclusively in 1988, getting all his colors from plants and cochineal bugs. In the same year he began cultivating his own cochineal for producing all hues of red; a three month-long process. In addition to cochineal he obtains colors from indigo, pomegranate, nuts, marigold and coconut shells. Jose hand cards and hand spins all of his yarn before dyeing it, and then hand weaves his rugs on a traditional Mexican loom. Each rug takes several weeks and a large rug can take several months to complete.

On Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 7:30 P.M., the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts, presents an evening with Christopher Morgan Loy, composer / pianist featuring guest artist William Hurley, Violist. Loy and Hurley will be performing a program of classical works by Beethoven, Schumann, Mozart and others. This concert is also the premiere performance of Christopher Morgan Loy's recent composition Nine Preludes for Piano - Elaborated Haiku op. 66.

Christopher Morgan Loy is a composer / pianist who has served as Professor of Theory and Composition at Binghamton University from 2005 to 2013, organist/pianist at the First Baptist Church of Ithaca and is a former instructor for the Conservatory. His works have been performed and premiered in Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, New York, San Francisco, San Antonio, and Ithaca. Loy has earned a Master of Music in Composition degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in composition from Cornell University.

He will be joined by William Hurley, an archetier/luthier, performer and teacher of violin/viola at The Community School of Music and Arts, the Binghamton Philharmonic, Music's Recreation, and others.

Upstate New York is a true melting pot for traditional fiddle music, and Tim Ball has been hearing and playing that music for nearly his whole life. Upstate Crossroads sheds new light on nearly-forgotten tunes and old favorites from all corners of the state, as well as drawing repertoire and inspiration from the surrounding Irish-American, New England, Canadian, and Bluegrass traditions. Tim is joined for this concert by Jane Knoeck, a fabulous pianist with more than 30 years of experience playing traditional dance music.

Part of the Stewart Park Centennial Celebration

"A Midsummer Night's Musicale," a new theatrical production with lyrics by Briel Felton, music by John Bunge, and choreography by Samantha Johnson, will be performed on the Midsummer Stage in Ithaca's Stewart Park on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 4 pm and again at 5:30 pm, as part of the Park's Centennial celebration. The show's four songs and four dances re-interpret the classic Shakespeare play from a modern perspective: the music is at once romantic and contemporary, across a wide range of moods, with memorable songs professionally performed. Admission is free and open to the public, please bring a lawn chair or blanket. Running time is about 40 minutes, rain date is July 31.

The players are The Merry Wanderers: singers Syona Ayyankeril, Marissa Plati and Amber Ward; musicians John Greenly (clarinet), William Hurley (viola), and John Bunge (banjo). The dancers are three dedicated contemporary ballet and jazz students, ages 9-15, from TCFA: Abby Arco, Zafira Ferrari and Maren Friedman.

An inclusive dance and improvisation workshop with games and exercises that are designed to promote creativity, reflection and awareness. This workshop is open to those age 12 and up, and to people of all abilities and levels of experience. We are asking all attendees who are not vaccinated to please wear a mask at this event. If you do not have one with you, one will be provided at the door.

After a thorough warm-up in a circle, we’ll move through the space and work in smaller groups and also show one another what we’ve been working on. We’ll try to meet each other with generosity and attentiveness and allow for the individuality of each person to fuel the dynamics of the group. There will be time for discussion and sharing, and hopefully plenty of beautiful and hilarious moments!

This workshop is led by Clint Lutes (T-burg High class of 1996/BFA Dance NYU 2002), currently residing in Paris. His choreographic work has increasingly become centered around working with non-professionals and uses dance as a vehicle to inform, connect and communicate. He participated in the research project Störung/Hafra’ah in Freiburg (D) in 2015, bringing together artists, scientists and people with Parkinson’s to study movement disorder. He has worked as a dancer, assistant and collaborator with the choreographer Eun Me Ahn for 20 years, is co-founder of the LUCKY TRIMMER Performance Series in Berlin, and has worked on projects with non-professionals in collaboration with the Theatre National Chaillot, Théâtre de la Ville Paris, Festival Paris Quartier d’Été, Festspielhaus St. Pölten, Theater Freiburg and others.

He went on to co-create the non-profit DaPoPa, which utilizes choreographic, improvisation and somatic practices in its activities. Clint has also joined the research group Labodanse, with improvisation, attention and togetherness being the basis for their studies.

TOiVO is a band from Trumansburg, NY featuring a mix of instrumentals and vocals for dancing waltzes, tangos, cajun two-steps, country honky-tonk, swing, polkas, and cheek to cheek slow dances.

An outdoor concert at the Conservatory

Annie and Marie Burns create uplifting, transcendent music filled with warmth and conviction. Stirring and reverent, their passionate, seductive harmonies and lyrics are bursting with spirit and soul. The Burns Sisters are renowned for their pure harmony, beautiful lyrics and joyful energy.

The Burns Sisters wrote and recorded their own songs and launched albums through Columbia Records and Rounder records. Marie and Annie now release on their own label "Sisters Music". The two have written and produced together and apart approximately 20 CDs. The Burns Sisters have shared the stage with many great folk legends, including Arlo Guthie, Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger, Odetta, Jimmy Lafave, David Amram, Radoslav Lorkovic, Chris Thile, Fred Eaglesmith, Willie Nelson, Sarah Lee and Johnny Irions, Folk Uke, and even the Boston Pops.

They have played venues from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Old Opry, and from hills of Northern Thailand to the hills of Clare Ireland. They have graced many a track with their beautiful backup harmonies, on projects too numerous to mention. The sisters are mainstays at The Woody Guthrie Folk Fest in Okemah Oklahoma, and will be there this July, 2015, singing their hearts out with songs from their new CD.  Annie and Marie have both had their songs featured on television including ‘ER’ and ‘Holiday High school Reunion’

A live outdoor show presenting some of some of the greatest music of all time by Ella Fitzgerald, with legendary local singer Diana Leigh and friends at the Conservatory. Saturday, May 22 at 7pm. Diana Leigh (vocals) has been performing in a variety of formats for over 25 years. Her background includes blues, rock, folk, country, reggae, and a’capella, but her heart is in the jazz standards of the 20’s through the 50’s. She has studied with voice teachers Gordon Cook and Marty Heresniak.

Born in Manhattan to jazz trumpeter John Glasel, Diana grew up in the creative hotbed of Woodstock, NY, where music was “a way of life.” She was also involved in theater during those formative years. Since moving to Ithaca in the late 1980’s, she's been a member of local groups The Little Big Band, The Blue Blazers, Sugar Moon, The Riveters, The UnderTones, The Savoy Stompers, and the Incidentals, as well as under her own name as bandleader.

Ken Zeserson (sax and vocals) has played with many pop, blues and jazz bands in the area these last three decades, but none more fun than Diana Leigh & Friends! Ken retired from a 'real' job several years ago, but at this point he can't remember what he did. For Ken, life is music!

Kevin Jones (guitar) has been playing since the age of twelve, after a childhood of studying piano and trumpet. He gradually gravitated towards jazz, as a desire grew to use the guitar as a tool to express an inner musical voice. He wanted to be able to "play what he heard in his head." Kevin studied jazz at SDSU, and worked full time in a variety of musical contexts in the San Diego area until moving to Ithaca in 2019. As a member of the Nathan Hubbard Trio, Kevin received the award for Best Jazz Album at the 2020 San Diego Music Awards.

Stu Zimny (acoustic bass) has been playing music since he was a child, and after college took up the double bass. He studied with various jazz greats as well as classical musicians in New York, Boston, and California. Living in the southwest for 15 years and working as a technologist, Stu freelanced in both jazz and classical settings. He relocated to the Finger Lakes region and has been working locally with various groups since 2017.

Keith Evan Green (drums & percussion) plays inspired music of all styles, with a focus on small-group jazz. Keith has performed at Carnegie Hall with the orchestra of Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also played throughout the NYC-metro area, and has performed and taught widely in Seattle and San Francisco.

Benjamin Hunter is an award winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, community activist, social entrepreneur, and educator. Living Blues magazine wrote, “An unbridled freedom and genre emancipation is evident in Ben Hunter’s music, yet the deep blues are a cornerstone of his style”.

In 2016, his America roots duo with Joe Seamons took first place in the International Blues Competition. In 2018, Benjamin composed the music for the critically acclaimed production, Black Bois.

As well as a musician, Benjamin is the founder and director of Community Arts Create, co-founder of the Hillman City Collaboratory, co-founder of Black & Tan Hall, sits on the Seattle Music Commission, and is a teaching artist for JazzEd as well as festivals around the world. Benjamin is a 2020/2021 Artist-in-Residence at On The Boards, and is a 2020 Artist Trust Fellowship Awards recipient.

On Friday, March 26th at 8pm, the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts is proud to present a free live-streamed concert featuring fiddler Vi Wickam. From bluegrass and jazz to rock & roll and old-time fiddle, Vi exudes energy, passion, humor, and musical mastery in every performance. In this special St. Patrick’s performance, he and accompanist Franklin Taggart will present a Celtic themed show for the Conservatory.

Vi Wickam is a 4-time Colorado State Fiddling Champion, a finalist at the Grand Masters’ Fiddler Championship, and Runner Up in the National Fiddle Contest. He is also a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, (the Grammy people.)

With a performing career beginning with his family, Vi performed regularly with his brothers, father, and grandfather as The Wickam Family Band. Recently, in 2018, Vi had 2 albums chart in the top 5 of Folk DJ Radio.

Vi also performs with many projects, including as the cleverly named Vi Wickam and The Band, with cellist Dan Delaney as Fritto Misto, and with dulcimer player Steve Eulberg as duo Fiddle Whamdiddle. He also regularly sits in as a guest musician for local bands.

Vi will be joined by Franklin Taggart, a singer/songwriter/guitarist living in Loveland, Colorado. Franklin has played music all over the country from peoples’ homes to the Kennedy Center. He writes songs, and performs frequently in Northern Colorado and Southern Wyoming.

The members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, Finger Lakes chapter, are thrilled to present this annual exhibit of art and science. The show focuses on the many animals and plants that inhabit the ecosystems in the Finger Lakes region created by the abundance of water in the area. Twenty-seven artists, each in their own style and media, depict natural subjects in a way that will inspire viewers to become better observers of the world around them.

The show will be available to view online on the TCFA website beginning March 20 at TCFA.live. In addition, open gallery hours begin March 26 and run every Friday and Sunday from Noon to 4pm (except Easter Sunday April 4, Friday April 16 and Sunday April 18)

The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts is concluding its lecture series examining the intersection of science and fine arts with a presentation by Dr. Samantha Carouso-Peck (Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Psychology, Cornell University). This lecture will explore the ways in which birdsong resembles human song and speech, and how birds learn to sing by shaping up their tunes using feedback from parents and peers that is imperceptible to the human eye. Dr. Carouso-Peck will discuss the incredible vocal flexibility of songbirds, parrots, and other mimics that incorporate human sounds into their repertories, and how birds, like humans, pass down songs through the generations. She will also take a ‘bird’s eye view’ of how birds perceive time, sound, and motion differently from us, and how this affects their learning of song and dance, from acoustic acrobatics to backflips to tapdancing.

Samantha Carouso-Peck began her animal research career studying word learning in African grey parrots in the lab of Dr. Irene Pepperberg at Brandeis University. She then studied the visual object recognition system of rats in the neuroscience lab of Dr. David Cox at Harvard University. Her doctoral research focused on social effects on song learning in zebra finches, studying how tiny social cues imperceptible to humans are a driving force in shaping a young finch’s song. As a postdoctoral researcher, she is investigating how humans in classroom settings learn from social interaction, and developing theoretical models of how and why the ability to learn to vocalize evolved. Her research has been featured in Science magazine, Scientific American, at Google SciFoo, and published in Current Biology, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Philosophical Transactions, and Animal Behaviour.

The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts is proud to present Songs of Separation, featuring lyric baritone and Trumansburg native Geoffrey Peterson accompanied by Richard Montgomery on piano. This performance of traditional spirituals and contemporary works will be presented as an online premiere on February 27th at 7pm, available free to the public.

Songs of Separation is a celebration of African-American composers spanning the works of Margaret Bonds, William Grant Still, and Grammy nominated Damien Sneed.

Currently living in Houston, Texas, Mr. Peterson is an advocate for social justice through music. He has been a soloist and ensemble member with the Houston Ebony Opera Guild, The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers, and the Vitamin L Chorus. Mr. Peterson has also been active as a teaching artist with Houston Grand Opera’s HGOco program, leading empathy training workshops at the Harris county juvenile detention center. He has been a featured performer with their acclaimed Opera to Go program. Credits include “Pavo Picasso” (Strega Nona), “Dulcamara” (The Elixir of Love), and “Isabella”/“The King” (Cinderella in Spain). Mr. Montgomery is a faculty member of Ithaca College.

February 21 at 6PM - A Zoom lecture examining the intersection of art and science

In the second of our lecture series exploring the intersection of art and science, Dr. David T. Peck (Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Entomology, Cornell University) will explore how honey bees dance and communicate information about their environment to each other, relaying information that is critical for their survival as a community and family. This lecture will investigate how the honey bee dance language works, as well as what they communicate through their dancing. The parallels between bee dances and human dancing will be explored. While young humans must practice their dancing before they master the forms, young bees need comparatively little practice before they can use dance to prompt their colony to action. Bees and humans are both highly social creatures that rely upon close relationships to community members, and both use dance as a way to communicate important ideas. Since sick bees also don't dance as accurately, and since a number of human activities can hurt bee colony health, Dr. Peck will also share ways you can help protect the health of dancing honey bees and other native bee species.

David Peck did his doctoral research in the lab of Professor Tom Seeley in Cornell's Department of Neurobiology and Behavior. He has studied the behavior of the devastating varroa mite, as well as the behaviors bees use to resist these parasites, particularly the bees that have been living in forests without any beekeeper assistance. He has also performed research on the way that bee behaviors (particularly honey robbing) can transmit mites between colonies. As a postdoctoral researcher he has conducted research on the native honey bees of Madagascar as well as the tiny varroa-free population of bees living in Newfoundland Canada, and is advising the provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador on the best way to protect their bees from a varroa incursion. This spring he will join Betterbee Inc. as their Director of Research and Education.

Soil Painting: Creating Art with the Ground under our Feet

Kirsten Kurtz, Cornell University soil scientist and internationally recognized soil painter will be sharing her soil paintings and practices via a virtual art show hosted by TCFA.

Kurtz creates her own paints from soil she collects as manager of the Cornell Soil Health Lab. She is passionate about communicating the importance of preserving and promoting healthy soil and sustainable farming practices through her art. The virtual art show will feature Kurtz’s catalog of soil paintings (including the debut of some new works) coupled with a lecture on her methods, inspirations and the science behind her art.

Kirsten is a soil scientist at Cornell University as well as a classically trained artist with a Bachelors of Art focused on painting. Kirsten manages the Cornell Soil Health Lab and is currently an MS candidate at Cornell. Kirsten’s work has been featured in multiple media outlets. The videos of her events have been viewed over 50,000 times and she has been an invited speaker for various classes at Cornell and at scientific conferences around the country. The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts is proud to present this free live-streamed concert. Tyler will be focusing on traditional music & bluegrass-related Flatpick style material, with some originals included songs and instrumentals.

National Flatpicking Champion Tyler Grant is an internationally recognized guitar virtuoso, songwriter, vocalist and leader of the band Grant Farm®. Tyler has appeared at most major US festivals and performed thousands of concerts and guitar workshops worldwide. He was an original member of the Emmitt-Nershi Band and was a sideman for Abigail Washburn, April Verch and Adrienne Young. He has produced five solo albums and six releases by Grant Farm on his own Grant Central Records. His 2018 collaborative release, Kanawha County Flatpicking, reached #14 on the US Folk DJ chart. The latest Grant Farm album, Broke In Two, released June 2019, is an ambitious concept album which furthers the stories of characters and archetypes introduced on the previous release, Kiss The Ground. Tyler was also host of the Meeting on the Mountain® LIVE Broadcast, a radio-style musical program based in Fort Collins, CO, from 2015-2018.

In addition to the National Flatpicking Championship at Winfield in 2008 and Merlefest Doc Watson Guitar Championship in 2009, Tyler has also won the Rockygrass, Wayne Henderson, and the New England Flatpicking Championships. He has been featured in Acoustic Guitar, Flatpicking Guitar, Fretboard Journal and Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine. Tyler has been an instructor at CalArts (where he earned is BFA in Guitar Performance), Rockygrass Academy, Sore Fingers UK, Kaufman Kamp, Augusta Heritage Center Bluegrass Week, Grand Targhee Bluegrass Camp, Julian Family Fiddle Camp, Nimblefingers, St. Louis Flatpick and JamPlay.com among others. Tyler performs over 200 shows per year and lives in Denver, Colorado, when he is not on the road.

Dec. 6 - A Canon for Reunion

Join us for the world premiere of John Bunge's newest work. "A Canon for Reunion" is a large-scale canon or round for quartet, in two movements of about 10 minutes each. The music proceeds from a somewhat classical mood in the first movement to a more romantic feeling in the second, the overall motion being toward hope and optimism. The performers are: Maggie Burke*, clarinet; William Hurley, viola; Christopher Morgan Loy, piano; and John Bunge, banjo.

In view of the rapidly changing world outside of music, we decided to convert our penultimate rehearsal of the "Canon" into an audio/video recording session. This took place November 22 at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts with all social distancing and masking regulations in place. Chris Ploss of Sunwood Recording came in with less than 24 hours notice, and Mark Costa, Managing Director of the Conservatory, was our videographer. Thanks to the skill and professionalism of all concerned we were able to record the entire "Canon" (two movements) - in 2 hours!

Instead of the originally planned live-streamed performance, we will premiere the performance recording at 3 pm (only) on YouTube. If you can listen on a good sound system, it will bring out the Conservatory's magnificent acoustics. Following the premiere, at 3:30, the composer and performers will hold a Q&A via Zoom.

TCFA and TEF combine efforts for art auction fundraiser

This fall, the Trumansburg Education Foundation (TEF) and the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (TCFA) are proud to announce the 2020 Annual Community Art Auction as a joint fundraiser. Last April, due to the pandemic,TEF's annual art auction was postponed with the hopes of a future live auction at the start of the school year. However plans for such a gathering remain impossible at this time. Fortunately, in the spirit of cooperation and determination, the two organizations are joining forces to bring the auction online with open gallery hours at the Conservatory.

Mark Costa, Managing Director at TCFA explained “…we are excited to work with TEF to reimagine the Community Art Auction event in these extraordinary times. By combining our efforts, we are hoping to reach art enthusiasts nationwide. The Conservatory faces a great need as we move into the uncertainty of 2021. With the public’s support, we can continue to bring dance, visual art and music education and performance to the community with classes and free online events. This fundraiser will help to keep both of our organizations sailing through the storm.”

Traditionally, the Art Auction has long been part of the Trumansburg Education Foundation's annual fundraising schedule and in the past has been held in March as a culminating event for Youth Art Month. The Foundation is run by a volunteer board of directors and provides grants and supports educational programs in the schools and community. The money raised through this new online format will allow TEF to continue to fund local educational opportunities and initiatives and the TEF board is excited to partner with the Conservatory on this upcoming event.

In this reimagined format, national, local and student artists works will join in a combination art show / online auction event. Proceeds will be split evenly between the two organizations. The artwork in the fundraiser will be on display at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts, 5 McLallen St in Trumansburg NY, and viewable by the public during open gallery hours for everyone to enjoy. Visitors can pre-register for 15 minute private viewing time slots, while walk-in attendees will be accommodated, as space allows.

The final day of the online auction will be Tuesday, December 1, ending at 10pm EST. Winners are encouraged to pick up their artwork in person at the Conservatory. Packing and shipping will be at the buyer’s expense.

Something Old, Something New

On November 7th, 2020 at 7:30 PM, long time TCFA guitar instructor Bill Gregg will present a live-stream only concert of traditional and original music on the autoharp and a variety of folk instruments in two sets. Streamed live from the Conservatory stage, he will be accompanied by highly accomplished guitarist Phil Robinson.

The first set will consist of tunes and songs from the American folk tradition, “Something Old”. This will range from sprightly tunes to haunting ballads, as well as familiar standards from the tradition.

The second set, “Something New” will be all original pieces written by Mr. Gregg, including a premiere performance of his original autoharp tune written in honor of former president Jimmy Carter. Bill’s lifetime of studying and performing American folk music is reflected in these new compositions.

This concert was originally scheduled for early May but, due to the impact of the pandemic, was postponed. Now, thanks to the Conservatory's streaming capability, we will present this program live for free to the public. Donations made during the performance will support the Conservatory's ongoing efforts to bring art, music, and dance instruction, as well as world class artistic events to our community. TCFA is proud to feature Oona and James performing an online only concert

live from the Conservatory stage! Concert starts at 7pm.

Originally from Upstate New York, Oona Grady (fiddle/viola/vocals) and James Gascoyne (guitar/banjo/vocals) play and sing North Atlantic dance tunes and folk songs.

Steeped in Irish music for as far back as she can remember, Oona spent many years living in Cork, Ireland, where she honed her skills as a fiddle player and Irish music specialist. Upon moving back to her hometown of Ithaca, NY, Oona immersed herself in the local traditional music scene and incorporated old time and Cajun tunes into her repertoire.

Growing up outside Louisville, KY, James was surrounded by music from an early age; radio, vinyl records, church music, and live concerts were a part of daily life. Finding his own musical style as an adult, James always keeps his ears open for sounds – new, old, familiar, or strange. While singing and playing guitar and banjo with Drank The Gold, he delves into the traditions of American old time and Irish dance tunes, while keeping true to his borderless, experimental musical roots.

Now based in Saratoga Springs, NY, Oona and James collaborate as Drank The Gold, bringing new perspectives and innovative arrangements to the music they love. Craic agus ceol (good times and music)!

TCFA is proud to announce John Miller performing on guitar in a free live-stream online only concert.

The program will focus on Country Blues, with a mix of his own original compositions and arrangements in that style. Along the way, he'll also be singing and playing some classics from the Great American Songbook, with writers like Hoagy Carmichael and Jerome Kern, to name a few. Join us!

John Miller was inspired to teach himself guitar after seeing Mississippi John Hurt at the 1963 Philadelphia Folk Festival, playing whenever he could on borrowed instruments. In his junior year of high school he bought his first guitar, and his learning really accelerated. While attending Cornell as an undergraduate, he recorded his first two solo albums, as well as two albums with the Ithaca-based Bluegrass trailblazers, Country Cooking, of which he was a charter member. John went on to record three more solo albums before the age of thirty, and has since maintained a busy schedule of teaching, composing and recording. In recent years, he has focused on teaching, and in addition to teaching at music camps in the U.S., Canada and England, has recorded seventeen video lessons for Stefan Grossmans' Guitar Workshop and had four instructional books on Country Blues Guitar published by Mel Bay.

A native of Italy, D’Agostino arrived in America 33 years ago. Since then, he has toured across the globe, performed with guitar legends such as Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel, Sergio Assad, explored a variety of guitar techniques, and absorbed musical styles from Classical to Brazilian to Jazz. In 2017 Guitar Player listed him as one of the 50 transcendent superheroes of the acoustic guitar. His signature Seagull acoustic guitar has been voted among the ten best signature guitars by Guitar Player magazine and his trademark open tunings are often the compositional vehicle which sparks the genesis of most of his well-crafted pieces. The St. Patrick’s Day Ceili Irish Dance at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts will be held on Saturday, March 14th beginning at 6:30PM.

This fundraiser for TCFA includes live music provided by local Celtic musicians, Three Stone Fire with dance instruction by Kathy Whitfield of Rince Na Saor Irish Dance Studio.

Everyone is welcome, and no previous experience is needed.  Celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day with dancing, music and refreshments all to benefit TCFA!  Admission is $5 at the door.

One-of-a-kind composer, guitarist and singer-songwriter Hiroya Tsukamoto will demonstrate fingerstyle techniques (playing with the fingers in place of a pick), including chords and basic theory.

In this workshop Hiroya will cover how to practice on a daily basis to improve your skills. He breaks down different elements of music such as tone and rhythm and explains how to apply them to a regular daily practice routine.

SOUK performs traditional Arabic and Turkish instrumental music, with focus on Maqam and Iqa, the scales and rhythms that define these traditions. Nikolai Ruskin plays Oud and Nay, with Dara Annissi and Jesse Koennecke on darbuka and riq. Souk was formed in October, 2010 by Nikolai Ruskin with fellow musicians who have been performing together for nearly twenty years.

Souk ’s goal is to create an atmosphere that ranges from relaxing background music to exciting dance music, and to share the sound of the Middle East in a way that listeners from all walks of life might connect with. Their name is the Arabic word for market, Souk (also Souq or Suq; pronounced “sook”). Historically, souqs were held outside of cities in the location where caravans loaded with goods would stop and merchants would display their goods for sale. At that time, souqs were more than just a market to buy and sell goods; they were also major festivals and many cultural and social activities took place in them. Just as the souq is a market place where many goods are available to peruse, ‘ Souk : Middle Eastern Grooves’ offers their variety of musical wares in hopes that there will be something for all of their listeners to enjoy.
